TWD: Chocolate Oatmeal Almost-Candy Bars

This week's Tuesday's with Dorie recipe was Chocolate Oatmeal Almost-Candy Bars, chosen by Lillian of Confectiona’s Realm.

These appeared to be quite popular amongst the TWD crowd and I have to say that I whole-heartedly agree. They were REALLY tasty. And definitely candy bar-ish... chocolatey, chewy, and substantial.

There was a lot of talk on the TWD forum about the raisins, whether to add them, substitute another ingredient, or leave them out all together. (It seems like raisins are among the most-talked-about ingredients, and one of the most disliked... lots of raisin-hate goin' on) I left them in and really didn't notice them that much, but then, I like raisins.

Definitely will make these again. (Although, I say that and I never make anything again, come to think of it. I'm always making something new or trying a different version of the same thing. So, I guess I should say that someday when I'm old and done experimenting, I'll make these again :) )

OK, that's that, and you know the drill from here... if you'd like to see the recipe, stop by Lillian's site, or find yourself a copy of Dorie Greenspan's book "Baking, From my Home to Yours".

Raising hater here.

I added peanut butter chips to the topping.

I like raisins. The rest of the fam--not so much! I left them out. I actually went a whole different route here, but the oatmeal cookie base is de-lish and so were the pecans and caramel I added in the center--with the chocolate, of course!
Love your long, slender bars!

I hear you about making things from the book again. Or any recipe, for that matter! Too many to try, so little oven space.

I'm one of the raisin-haters, but I loved these without them! I like the shape you cut--they really are like chocolate bars!

I'm glad you like raisins too! I don't know why people are so afraid of them! Your bars look great!

raisins should be limited to oatmeal raisin cookies, and then only in small amounts--that's my humble opinion on the matter. regardless, your planks of cookie look delicious. :)

I am a raisin lover! Not too many of us in TWD I fear. :) Your bars look amazing. Love that you cut them into long thin bars. Perfect.

Ahhhh... great minds think alike! If it tastes like a candy bar, why not make it look like a candy bar! Slender, slick and super mouthwatering just like the real thing!

very weel done, Jacque!

Long strips of goody-ness.

Should go back and Make Most of them again. But we move forward....always forward.

Maybe when we are done with the book....

These were great and yours look so good. I skipped the raisins for other people's benefit, but if I get around to making them again I will include them.

I think those are the prettiest ones I've seen yet. Thanks for baking with me this week!

My kids are always asking "Why don't you make such-and-such again?" "Can't gotta keep moving forward. There are more recipes to try."
Love your photos of the long bars!

Love your bars -- they look so elegant. I'm glad you liked these. I'm actually for sure making these again. I ate nearly all of them the first time, so now I have to make them to share the goodness.

Next time, I'm leaving out the raisins. I REALLY love peanuts, though. Your bars look fabulous!

Your photos look great! With so many new things to try, it is hard to get back to recipes even if they're really good.

I can identify with your comment about not really making things again. Same here. It's so much more interesting to keep trying new things.

Like the way your cookies look like candybars.

Oh, look at your adorable bars! So cute. And I hope we can still be friends, even though I fall firmly into the anti-raisin camp. Truce?
